On December 8, 2016 Pantone announced “Greenery” (15-0343 TCX) as the 2017 Color of the Year, and we’re big fans.
With a little hope and a lot of research, we had predicted the Color of the Year to be Pantone 384, an olive green (pictured below compared to Greenery) and we were pleasantly surprised to find out we were almost right.
Pantone 384 is a unique hue that made us feel nostalgic. On the flip side, Greenery is brighter and feels more fresh and new.
"Greenery bursts forth in 2017 to provide us with the reassurance we yearn for amid a tumultuous social and political environment. Satisfying our growing desire to rejuvenate and revitalize, Greenery symbolizes the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose."
Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute
Inspired by spring, Greenery (“nature’s neutral”) evokes a sense of renewal and urges us to get back to what’s really important — our connections with one another and with nature. Recent trend reports found on WGSN have reflected this idea as well, particularly with millennial travelers. There seems to be a want and a need for people to disconnect from reality and technology, and spend time unplugged in order to “reset,” so to speak. Maybe 2017 will be the year we all get to do that.
People seem to be loving this color, which is a good thing since we’re sure to see it spring up in fashion, home interiors, and any other industry where color is present.
Personally, I think Greenery is a great choice. It’s fresh, it’s bright, and there’s a calming quality to it. Whether or not it will have the rejuvenating effect Pantone hopes it will is still to be seen, but I have high hopes.
This year we’re seeing green.
